    With the ever increasing costs of doing business, Agricultural farmers are being hit hard again by the new regulations that now effect their diesel running equipment. Government regulations have decreased sulfur content in diesel fuel from as much as 2000 parts per million just 5 years ago to less than 15 parts today.

    The process used to reduce the sulfur also reduces the fuel’s lubricating properties. Lubricity is a measure of the fuel’s ability to lubricate and protect the various parts of the engine’s fuel injection system and other vital engine parts from wear. The process required to reduce sulfur to 15 ppm also removes aromatic compounds that aids in lubricity. To manage this change ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) adopted the lubricity specification defined in ASTM D975 for all diesel fuels and this standard went into effect in 2005.

    Not only has sulfur content been reduced but refineries are now forced to blend “bio” fuels made from soy beans or corn into existing stocks of “straight run” fuels, further degrading the fuels we use in equipment to substandard levels. These “bioblends” have been tested and found conclusively to be less stable, degrade much faster, aid in algae and bacterial growth, decrease fuel efficiency, decrease lubricity, increase water absorption and damage filters, fuel pumps and other vital agricultural engine components.
